This drawing can be connected to the painting: Etude pour Le Baiser maternel, ca. 1898 in Rodolphe Rapetti (dir.), Eugène Carrière, 1849 – 1906, catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre peint, Paris, 2008, no. 815 (ill.)

Drawings by Eugène Carrière are rare on the market. They reveal an intimate aspect of his work along with his talent for creating powerful, whilst extremely simplified compositions, focused on the female silhouette and feminine presence.

Carrière is well known for his representations of Maternité and was greatly inspired by his wife and family. Madame Carrière was often portrayed, holding, embracing or admiring her new-borns and young children.  In his quintessential monochrome paintings, Carrière unfailingly captures the energy and emotion of these highly affective scenes. This charcoal drawing illustrates the first step of Carrière’s creative process and comes directly from the artist’s family, in whose possession it has remained until now.
